ABOUT
The Winchester Gallery is part of the Winchester School of Art, which was founded in 1870 and originally housed in Wolvesey Palace. Our striking modernist campus on Park Avenue opened in 1966 and expanded in the 1990s after the art school merged with the University of Southampton. Like the School, the Gallery has had several physical locations over time, balancing heritage with innovation. The Winchester Gallery continues to be a primary link between the activity of the Art School and the wider cultural community.
Mission
The Winchester Gallery is a free public venue hosting a continuous programme of temporary exhibitions and related activities that draw on and contribute to the research activity of the University of Southampton. Part of Winchester School of Art, our location in Winchester city centre generates productive exchanges between research and education at the School and the knowledge embedded in our communities. We invite interaction with artists and the artistic process, creating opportunities for dialogue about issues and ideas that affect us all.
Vision
We use creative research to develop meaningful relationships, create unexpected connections, and drive community impact across the visual arts.
Values
We share and embody the University of Southampton’s core values:
• we work co-creatively and collaboratively with all partners
• we champion egalitarian approaches to exhibition development, gallery leadership, and community engagement
• we strive for agility in our support of partners and the development of our programme
• we embrace transformational modes of leadership that prioritise dialogue and promote trust
• we support research activity about and best practices of sustainability through our exhibitions and events
