Detour

Safehouse 1 – Maverick Projects | 12 to 13 September 2026

Tangent is a collective of 6 mixed media artists: Alice, Jess, Lisa, Lucy, Megan and Penny who have recently graduated from Winchester School of Art. The collective’s individual practices are concerned with textiles and material relations.

‘Detour’ brings an exciting opportunity to unite the work the Tangent Collective has been developing in the short period between finishing their degrees and now. Through exhibiting outside of an academic setting, the group are rerouting to become professional creative practitioners, on the first step: the detour. A lot of the work you will experience in this show is heavily inspired by the unorthodox gallery space that is Safehouse 1. The decaying and run down environment juxtaposes the theme of material relations, creating a visceral reaction emphasised by the mix of mediums, from print making to crochet. Contrasting the decaying environment with new unseen work bears witness to the blossoming of the collective’s professional practices in this evolving transitional period.

About the artists

Lisa Babbé

Lisa Babbé is a Bournemouth based mixed media abstract painter and multidisciplinary artist. Her work focuses on materiality, process, and intuition. Working from a small studio on the coast, Lisa responds to botanical nature and landscape from the area. In her landscapes she incorporates features of natural forms that occur on architecture and industrial sites. By translating their texture through long processes of paint application and removal, along with using sand from the local beach.

In 2025 Lisa created her own exhibition with artist Vera Dograsvili, ‘Uprooted’. Some of her work from this exhibition now sit in Alfred Home properties in Hampshire. Lisa graduated with a First-class honour in Fine Art from the University of Southampton in July 2026 and received the Nancy Balfour prize for Painting. She is currently in the artist group ‘Ripe Blueberries’ alongside ‘Tangent’ Collective where she will be exhibiting some of her recent work.

Jess Moorhouse

Jess Moorhouse is a multidisciplinary artist centering her practice around seeing and sensing landscape. She operates across an intersection of printmaking and painting, where the action of painting is then encapsulated in time through a transition into print. Navigation through digital technologies, photography and experimental mark making allows Jess to interrogate the fluxes of the natural environment and investigate the remembered experience that develops alongside them. These complex range of references inform her process, allowing materiality to become a crucial part of understanding the interconnectivity of the landscapes she is drawn to. Her pieces demonstrate hidden flows and energies, emulating volatile forms. In 2026, Jess graduated from Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, with First Class Honours in Fine Art and was also awarded the Nancy Balfour Prize for Printmaking. She is a member of the 2026/27 cohort of RIPE, a graduate artist collective run by visual arts organisation ‘a space arts’ and also is a member of Tangent Collective.

Megan Filsell

Within her paintings, Megan Filsell describes the experience of living with an autistic brain. Through her use of overwhelmingly bright colour and patterns she searches for a way to translate how she sees the world around her. Her devotion to mixed media began at college, where she did a Level 3 Extended Diploma in art and design. Wood and acrylics are her preferred mediums, as she can achieve vibrant flat colours and the paint pens glide across the surface. If she isn’t working with paint she is crocheting, using lots of different yarn, mixing textures and thickness to exaggerate the physicality of the wool. No pattern is followed for these, just intuition, she lets the pieces fold over onto themselves, verging on sculptures. She is developing her own language with the completion of each piece, and she takes inspiration from this idea. Megan graduated from Winchester School of Art with a First Class Honours in Fine Art.

Lucy Grant

Lucy Grant’s artistic practice has a strong grounding in appreciating the awe in the natural world that goes unnoticed, often abstracting these forms into a new, ambiguous state. Their approach to installing paintings as a fluctuating sculptural experience references the malleability of a landscape over time, interacting with viewers in three-dimensions. Lucy Grant is part of the Ripe Southampton Graduate Program 2026-27 and is one of the six founders of Tangent Artist Collective. They have also been shortlisted for the Freelands Painting Prize 2026, the Aspex Platform Prize 2026, and have recently exhibited as a finalist for the Little Forest Land Art Competition in North Boarhunt, following on from their first solo exhibition ‘Between a Rock and a Soft Place’ in February. Grant graduated with First Class Honours in BA Fine Art from Winchester School of Art this July.

Alice Hofman

Centred on the balance between monstrosity and femininity, Alice Hofman’s practice has steered into the world of the ‘abject’, with a focus on smearing. Inspired by thinkers Julia Kristeva and Rosemary Betterton, Alice immersed her practice in the hidden and “unclean”, such as menstruation and female sexuality. In the realm of social and political discussions, smearing bodily substances is viewed as a bold way to challenge existing social norms and power dynamics. She replicates these feelings by painting with ink on Gelli-plates, creating visceral but ethereal imagery. This self-discovered process has been carried over into her interest in materiality. Alice listens to her materials, collaborating with them rather than imposing her will. After graduating from WSA and being awarded the Nancy Balfour Prize of Studentship, Alice has shifted her efforts to working in collaboration with “Tangent” Artist Collective. Her work embraces a lack of control and imperfection; the next chapter naturally feeds into change and unpredictability.

Penelope Russell

Penelope Russell is a Wiltshire-based artist born in Kent who has been a practicing multi-disciplinary installation sculpture artist and illustrator for five years and counting. She graduated from Winchester School of Art with a First with Honours, having studied sculpture and painting in relation to local history through carpentry and textiles, with contrasting focus into surrealist scenes of kitschy excess. Her painting work has appeared across collaborative university shows, including the Southampton-based postgraduate collective Ripe. She has designed covers for four volumes of the University’s Creative Writing Society’s publication and has her written fiction work featured in two volumes. Outside of university, she holds regular art education workshops for young people at heritage sites and practices reenactment.
